An unknown village adorns with the beauty of nature and evergreen meadows came to live on 18th February 1836 when Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Deva was born under a husking pedal.

Kamarpukur is situated in Arambag subdivision of Hoogly district in the state West Bengal of India. The ancient prosperity and peace are still present in this place. The vast sea of green with multiple numbers of ponds, tanks, old buildings are bearing the glory of Kamarpukur.

Agriculture, cottage industries are the main source of income. Sweets like Jilipi, Sada Bonde, Nabat or rock candy are famous here.

1. The Living Room of Ramakrishna Deva: Once you entered the premises the serene atmosphere will blow your mind. Ramakrishna deva used to stay in the south-facing room at the western side of the premises. After the last rites of Ramakrishna Deva, our Holy Mother Sarada Ma used to live here despite dire financial condition and other difficulties.

2. The Mango Tree: Entering through the entrance and left behind the long concrete passage a big mango tree will come to our vision. This is the tree which was planted by Sri Ramakrishna Deva. It is still worshipped by giving offerings. You can take blessings here.

3. The Parlour: There is a private room (a hut made by mud & straws) used as a meeting room by Ramakrishna Deva to instruct his disciples.

4. Gadadhar’s Birth Place: A husking machine, a fireplace, and a lamp are engraved here. It is the place where Gadadhar was born under the manual husking machine and was slipped into the oven which was used for boiling the paddy. In the year 1951, the marble image of Ramakrishna Deva was installed here for worshipping. The tranquillity of this place is well maintained, and a long prayer hall in front of Ramakrishna Deva’s replica takes his devotees a level of spirituality.

Useful Tips: Visting hours in the temple is 04:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. IST and 04:00 p.m. to 09:00 p.m. IST in the month of April to September. For the month of October to March it is 04:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. IST and 03:30 p.m. to 08:30 p.m. IST. A kitchen cum dining hall facilitates feeding about 500 people at a time.


5. Yogi’s Shiva Temple: It is inside the premises and just in front of the mango tree. We can hear ever speaking stories regarding this temple, where Gadadhar’s mother felt a light came from lord shiva which entered in her body and she had conceived.

6. Haldar Pukur: The vast tank at the northern side of Yogi’s Shiva temple is known as Haldar Pukur. Gadadhar swam here with his friends in his early life.

7. Sitanath Pyne's house: We came out of the temple and started walking through the shadows of coconut trees, palm trees, banyan trees. Two storied mud house is another attraction of this area. We finally reached Pyne’s house. This house is under the blessings of greenery. A shiva temple is just inside this very house.

8. The Primary School of Lahas: after walking a few more distance an open school (Pathsala) was visible. It is actually a spacious natmandir of Durga Temple of Laha’s. Gadadhar joined here at the age of five, but later he showed less interest in studies and developed the tendency to get merged in ecstatic moods at the sight of beautiful scenery or at the contemplation of particular deities.

9. Bishnu Mandir of Lahas: Just behind the Durga Mandir and very far from the chaotic environment a very old Bishu Mandir is situated. Don’t miss this place if you come in Kamarpukur any time in the near future.

10. Gopeswar Shiva Mandir: Another shiva temple can be reached by walking for a minute. At the time of ecstasy of Ramakrishna Deva, his mother used to come here for praying. Besides this temple, we can see a holy pond named Kamar Pukur.

Useful tips: All these places are entry free. You can visit Kamarpukur along with Joyrambati (Only 5 kilometers from Kamarpukur) and Bonolota resort on a day trip.


How to Get in Kamarpukur

Kamarpukur, the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna Deva can be reached easily by road. Kolkata International Airport is 110 kilometers from Kamarpukur. You can reach Kamarpukur from Howrah railway station also by train. The nearest railway station is Tarakeswar which is 45 kilometers from Kamarpukur.

But the best way to visit Kamarpukur is by bus. Frequent bus service is available which connect Kamarpukur and Joyrambati to Kolkata. You can take CSTC buses from Esplanade Bus Terminus (Sahid Minar) at Kolkata. These tourist buses start in the morning and are available in every one and a half hour. Or, you can reach the Arambag bus stand and from there you can take another bus for Kamarpukur.


Best Time to Visit Kamarpukur

It is very hot in the season of summer, I will suggest you go there during winter. But many occasions are held here at various time. It's up to you when you want to go. You will enjoy the 3-4 hours driving from Kolkata, especially during the winter due to its lush green views of paddy fields and sightseeing.

Cultural Activities

Ramakrishna Math arranges various cultural program like folk dance, ballads, yatra, during Ramakrishna Deva’s birth anniversaries. Other cultural programs like Saradamani’s and Swamiji’s birth anniversaries, Bengali new year, kali puja, Durga puja, rath yatra, Christmas eve, Holi, etc.

It is accepted that Kamarpukur and Joyrambati is the best spiritual destination for both domestic and international visitors. Needless to say, the private tourist infrastructure in this area is the bare minimum.
